Frequently Asked Questions
Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: Which Weight Loss Medication Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions I hear is, "Should I choose semaglutide or tirzepatide?"
The answer is: it depends.
Both medications belong to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help reduce appetite, improve fullness, and support sustainable weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.
Semaglutide
Semaglutide has been available longer and has an excellent track record for both weight loss and diabetes management. It works by activating the GLP-1 receptor, helping you feel full sooner and reducing food cravings. Many patients do very well on semaglutide. Like any medication, semaglutide can cause side effects, most commonly nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or heartburn. While many patients tolerate it well, some find they experience more gastrointestinal side effects compared with tirzepatide.
Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is a newer medication that works on two hormone pathways (GLP-1 and GIP) instead of one. For many patients, this means:
-
Greater weight loss
-
Better appetite control
-
Less "food noise"
-
Often fewer gastrointestinal side effects (although everyone's experience is different)
Some people respond better to semaglutide, while others do better with tirzepatide. That's why treatment should always be individualized. At Why Wait Wellness, we review your medical history, health goals, previous experience with weight loss medications, and budget to determine which option is the best fit for you.
How much weight can I lose?
Most patients lose 10–20% of their body weight, depending on consistency, dosage, and lifestyle.
Why Does Weight Loss Feel Harder After Menopause?
Many women notice that what worked in their 30s simply doesn't work anymore. You're not imagining it. As estrogen declines during perimenopause and menopause, women often experience:
-
Increased abdominal fat
-
Loss of lean muscle mass
-
Increased insulin resistance
-
A slower metabolism
-
Increased hunger and cravings
The good news is that you are not "broken." Your body simply requires a different strategy. For most women, I recommend:
-
Prioritizing whole, minimally processed foods.
-
Following a consistent strength-training program with heavy resistance 2–4 days per week to preserve and build muscle.
-
Walking regularly for cardiovascular health and overall activity.
-
Prioritizing quality sleep.
-
Eating adequate protein every day.
Some women also benefit from hormone optimization or a low-dose GLP-1 medication to help reduce cravings, improve satiety, and support long-term success. The goal isn't simply to lose weight—it's to preserve muscle, improve metabolic health, and feel your best.
How often will I meet with Staci?
As often as needed. Most patients check in monthly.
Is this program right for beginners?
Absolutely. Staci guides you step-by-step from day one.
How Much Protein Do I Need While Taking a GLP-1?
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people eating too little protein while taking medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide. GLP-1 medications naturally decrease appetite, making it easier to unintentionally under-eat. While that may help with weight loss, it can also increase the risk of losing lean muscle if protein intake is too low.
Protein is one of the most important nutrients during a weight loss journey. Adequate protein helps:
-
Preserve lean muscle mass
-
Support a healthy metabolism
-
Improve fullness and reduce hunger
-
Promote recovery from strength training
-
Encourage fat loss while minimizing muscle loss
Rather than recommending the same amount for everyone, I individualize protein goals based on each patient's body composition, activity level, and overall goals. Most of my female patients do well with approximately 100–130 grams of protein per day, while many men require more depending on their size, muscle mass, and activity level.
During your consultation, we'll determine a protein goal that's appropriate for your body and create a plan that is realistic and sustainable for your lifestyle. I also encourage resistance training two to four days each week because the combination of adequate protein and strength training is one of the best ways to preserve muscle while losing body fat.
Remember, the goal isn't simply to weigh less. The goal is to become healthier, stronger, and build habits that help you maintain your results for years to come.
